CHAPTER EIGHT

“You seem tense.”

Courtney looked down at the light, fluffy bread roll that she’d nearly shredded. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. I’ve got plenty to be tense about, though.”

“So lay it on me,” Lisa offered. “I don’t have much of anything going on at the library this month, so I could use a little drama in my life.

“Well…” Courtney told Lisa practically everything, but she hesitated as she glanced around them at Salazar’s Salad Bar. Town gossip had a way of spreading like wildfire, and she didn’t want any of this to get out of control and cause more trouble. “Let’s see. First there are these dogs I’m fostering. I love them, but they’re a lot of work. I need to find better places for them, stable places where they could get some training, but so far, I haven’t had any luck. Dougie has chewed everything in my house, and yesterday he even chewed up a bunch of stuff out at Mr. Clark’s place!”

“At least he didn’t chew up the actual crime scene,” Lisa pointed out as she drizzled raspberry vinaigrette on her salad.

“That’s true. I’m sorry, officer, but my dog ate the evidence.” It was enough to make Courtney laugh a little, which she truly needed. “I know things will work out with the dogs. They always do in one way or another. I just feel sorry for them right now, and of course that’s not the extent of what I’m dealing with. I don’t even think I got to tell you yet that Nathan asked me out to dinner.

“Get out!” Lisa’s fork full of salad fell straight back into her bowl. “When? Why didn’t you tell me? What did you say?”

“Slow down,” Courtney laughed. “It was a few days ago, and I was honest with him. I need to get some of these other stressors off my hands before I can deal with something like that.”

Lisa rolled her eyes. “The whole world can be put on pause if a sweet, handsome man who loves animals asks you out. That’s like catching a white whale.”

“Then I’ll have to harpoon him later,” Courtney joked. “Besides, he seemed to understand. I’d be a horrible date right now, anyway. Instead of gazing dreamily into his eyes and asking him if he preferred the steak or salmon, I’d probably be ruminating on evidence and motives.”

“So, get it off your chest,” Lisa urged. “I’m always up for hearing about it, and the only thing you’ve told me so far is that he’s dead. Considering the police presence they showed on the news, it’s no secret that something happened.”

“No, but there’s not much in Curly Bay that is a secret,” Courtney pointed out. She pushed aside the napkin full of breadcrumbs and absently stirred her soup while she told Lisa all that’d happened at Mr. Clark’s place.

“Do you think this Mallory girl did it?” Lisa asked. “She had a key to the house, so she wouldn’t have any problem getting access to Mr. Clark at pretty much any time of day.
